Rudy Giuliani had a chance to investigate the widespread corruption taking place in the Biden family. Instead of doing the right thing, Rudy decided to turn the whole thing into a personal crusade that was designed to benefit himself. Now, he finds himself under investigation. By all accounts, things are getting very serious and he’s in deep trouble.
In case you haven’t heard, a federal search and seizure of materials at his Manhattan residence has already taken place. Considering Rudy’s level of notoriety and the fact that it became a front-page story as soon as it happened, we would have to assume that the Feds are closing in. The Feds are typically not going to raid someone’s home unless they have already been given all of the information that they need.
Per The New York Times: “Federal investigators in Manhattan executed a search warrant on Wednesday at the Upper East Side apartment of Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who became President Donald J. Trump’s personal lawyer, stepping up a criminal investigation into Mr. Giuliani’s dealings in Ukraine, three people with knowledge of the matter said.
One of the people said the investigators had seized Mr. Giuliani’s electronic devices. Executing a search warrant is an extraordinary move for prosecutors to take against a lawyer, let alone a lawyer for a former president, and it marks a major turning point in the long-running investigation into Mr. Giuliani.
The federal authorities have been largely focused on whether Mr. Giuliani illegally lobbied the Trump administration in 2019 on behalf of Ukrainian officials and oligarchs, who at the same time were helping Mr. Giuliani search for dirt on Mr. Trump’s political rivals, including President Biden, who was then a leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination.”
The New York Times says that Giuliani’s devices have been seized but they are not offering any further specifics on the matter. The Department of Justice has clearly decided to escalate the proceedings. Interestingly enough, this is not a decision that they were looking to make under the previous administration.
CNN has even taken note of this: “CNN previously reported that investigators late last year had raised the prospect of seeking a search warrant for Giuliani’s communications, but were met with resistance from Justice Department officials in Washington over the strength of their evidence, people familiar with the discussions told CNN.
It is unusual for prosecutors to execute a search warrant on a lawyer, although Manhattan federal prosecutors have done so before, most notably in recent years against another former lawyer for Trump, Michael Cohen.”
We cannot wait to hear the push back from Donald Trump about the timing of the raid. Merrick Garland was confirmed as Attorney General less than two months ago. It is hard to believe that he would make this move without having real evidence but the timing is a little suspicious. However, this could also be a form of political gamesmanship in the other direction.
It is entirely possible that the Department of Justice held back because they did not want Trump to get swept up with Rudy. In fairness, it must also be noted that Rudy was running his own consulting and lobbying firm at the time. This work is being investigated, not necessarily his work with the Trump administration. We are more than sure that Rudy and his legal clients are going to invoke attorney/client privilege as soon as possible here.
The only way that we can see Trump being involved here is if he had any sort of personal connection to the Giuliani dealings with Ukraine. While we are not predicting any sort of legal issues for the former president at the moment, all bets are off if Trump decided to get his hands dirty. Trump’s response to this news should give us all of the indications that we need on this front. One thing is for sure: this investigation is about to take a very interesting turn.
