At the moment, there is no way to verify any of what CNN has had to say here. They are presenting the story as an exclusive and there are certain challenges that are associated with that. The claim that is being made is still an incredible one. According to them, our intelligence agencies are said to have obtained data about all of the viruses that were studied at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
CNN reports that they are unsure as to how that is possible: “It’s unclear exactly how or when US intelligence agencies gained access to the information, but the machines involved in creating and processing this kind of genetic data from viruses are typically connected to external cloud-based servers — leaving open the possibility they were hacked, sources said.”
This institute once had an entire online repository that allowed them to store the data from each of the samples that their scientists were responsible for. They had taken these samples from the wild and continued to work on those viruses. The data on this website vanished (along with the website itself) in September 2019. This was before the coronavirus dangers became apparent to the rest of the world.
Dr. Shi Zhengli was even asked about the loss of the website. He did not know why the database had been pulled down, clearly. The story that he tried to come up with was farcical at best. He claimed that it was taken down because of hackers. We are not sure why that would have happened. After all, no one knew about the coronavirus yet. Why would anyone care if the information was made available?
Dr. Peter Daszak, who was partially responsible for funding the WIV research, offered up a similar explanation. Now, CNN is hinting to the fact that we are the ones who did it. They seem to have reason to believe that we have access to all of the aforementioned information now. The website had a public area and a private area when it was live and functional.
There has to be a wealth of interesting information in the latter section. The process of decoding the information is not as easy as it seems, though. For starters, a sizable amount of processing power is needed. All of the information is in Mandarin. As a result of these issues, finding someone who is able to handle the parsing of this data is incredibly challenging. Per CNN:
“Not only do intelligence agencies need government scientists skilled enough to interpret complex genetic sequencing data and who have the proper security clearance, they also need to speak Mandarin, since the information is written in Chinese with a specialized vocabulary.
“Obviously there are scientists who are (security) cleared,” one source familiar with the intelligence told CNN. “But Mandarin-speaking ones who are cleared? That’s a very small pool. And not just any scientists, but ones who specialize in bio? So you can see how this quickly becomes difficult.”
Despite all of this, there is a 90 day review taking place under the watchful eye of Joe Biden. CNN also reported that the lab leak theory is still alive and well among the intelligence community:
“For now, senior intelligence officials still say that they are genuinely split between the two prevailing theories on the pandemic’s origins, or some combination of both scenarios. CNN reported last month that senior Biden administration officials overseeing the 90-day review now believe the theory that the virus accidentally escaped from a lab in Wuhan is at least as credible as the possibility that it emerged naturally in the wild — a dramatic shift from a year ago, when Democrats publicly downplayed the so-called lab leak theory.”
“We’ve had extraordinary insight into this topic for many months, much more than has been declassified. Pretending we didn’t is political theater and a classic example of a politician trying to buy time by using the IC as a scapegoat,” says former DNI John Ratcliffe. Much like us, he thinks these are mere stalling tactics!
