As you know, there’s been a witch hunt of sorts going on against former President Donald Trump for years now. No matter what he does or says, it seems someone is always out to get him. But, I guess that’s what happens when you choose to fight for truth and righteousness in a world full of evil.
But it also seems that no matter what the political left throws at Trump, his family, and his business, he somehow ends up on top, smiling and proving the world wrong.
And this week proves to be yet another example of this.
As you likely know, New York’s state Attorney General Letitia James has been after Trump and his organization for some time. In fact, it has been years since James first filed to begin an investigation into the Trump Organization.
Like many on the political left, James believes that Trump is a white-collar criminal who has used his years of business success and keen intellect to cheat the system, whether that be via his corporate taxes, personal taxes, and/or business dealings. More specifically, James is investigating whether or not Trump “misstated the value of assets like skyscrapers and golf courses on financial statements for over a decade,” as The Associated Press reports.
However, as I said, it’s been years since the investigation was first initiated. Still, no concrete evidence has turned up, despite Trump handing over mountains of documents to the state.
Undoubtedly, the whole thing has become rather tiresome, if not completely annoying, for the Trump family and all those involved. And so it should come as no surprise that the businessman who is known to buck the system a bit hasn’t always complied very zealously.
In fact, in his annoyance with the constant harassment from James’ office, he’s actually refused to hand some things over. Part of this could be that James has steadily used her investigation into Trump to climb the political ladder. Even now, she is campaigning to be the state’s next governor.
Another part is that, according to Trump’s office, they could not locate all of the documents that James had requested.
Regardless of his reasons, the court of law doesn’t look favorably on such refusals. And so, in late April, Judge Arthur Engoron found Trump in contempt of court for failing to hand over documents James’ office had subpoenaed. In addition, the judge fined him $10,000 per day until the papers were filed as received.
On May 6, Trump attorney Alina Habba filed that all documents and subpoenaed information had been handed over and that Trump’s offices had complied fully with James’ requests. This means that Trump accumulated fines up until then, amounting to a total of $110,000.
This Wednesday, Engoron and the court recognized Trump for complying and released Trump from both the contempt of court finding and the daily fines.
However, Engoron has stated that Trump will have to actually pay those fines, as well as hand over a few more pieces of information.
According to CNBC, “if Trump’s legal team submits additional affidavits with more details about the searches for the documents, and the document retention and destruction policies of the Trump Organization by May 20,” the order of contempt is and will be officially lifted.
However, if the team does not succeed in submitting that information by the date required, the daily fines will once again be imposed, and Trump will again be held in contempt.
As Trump says, the “Witch Hunt” continues.
While other investigations into Trump, such as the one led by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, have been essentially dropped due to a lack of evidence and the two leading prosecutors resigning, James seems determined to take Trump down at whatever cost.
As Trump recently pointed out, he’s been “investigated by the Democrats more than Billy the Kid, Jesse James, and Al Capone combined. This has been going on for years….” And apparently, the plan is to keep the investigations going until they have made certain that Trump cannot make a political comeback.
I mean, that would be their worst nightmare, for him to have gone through all of this and to still come out smelling like a rose to most of the American people.
