Now that Joe Biden has tapped former State Department official Richard Stengel as “team lead” when assembling his US Agency for Global Media, there is no shortage of people who are very worried. Stengel still has some folks steamed because of his blistering op-ed that was written for the Washington Post. That liberal rag will publish practically anyone, it seems.
Americans were told that they needed to seriously consider objections by Arab diplomats to the First Amendment. If you think that we are somehow blowing this one out of proportion, you will want to read the piece for yourself.
From the man himself: “As a government official traveling around the world championing the virtues of free speech, I came to see how our First Amendment standard is an outlier. Even the most sophisticated Arab diplomats that I dealt with did not understand why the First Amendment allows someone to burn a Koran. Why, they asked me, would you ever want to protect that?”
“It’s a fair question. Yes, the First Amendment protects the ‘thought that we hate,’ but it should not protect hateful speech that can cause violence by one group against another. In an age when everyone has a megaphone, that seems like a design flaw,” he concludes. These sophisticated nations don’t even allow Christians to worship as they please but sure, Richard.
They don’t allow for any form of dissent or free speech either. The Arab nations that this man is praising do not create an environment where their people can feel safe. This is the man that Biden has chosen for a gig that is this important to the nation over the long haul. He claims to champion free speech but he criticizes any form of free speech he doesn’t like.
This sounds like the perfect Democrat to us. Jonathan Turley has taken Biden to task for this decision as well. “Stengel however is one of the most unnerving and outspoken voices against free speech. He wrote how hard it was to explain our views of free speech to Arab countries which of course routinely jail or even execute people for exercising free speech. However, Stengel was raising the point to suggest that they had a valid confusion over our values,” says Turley.
He wasn’t done there either. “That design flaw is free speech itself. So in a nation filled with gifted people to lead the effort on government media policy and positions, Biden selected a person who rejects the very essence of free speech. Stengel promises the “unity” of a nation silenced by government speech codes and censorship. If no one has a megaphone, free speech is no longer a problem,” he concluded.
It’s hard to find anything to nitpick here. Turley has said it better than we can. After spending four years hearing about how the mean orange man would bring about the dawn of fascism, this is rich. Biden and his cronies are perfectly happy to suppress the facts when it benefits them. If Trump is believed to behave in such a way?
The liberals are the first ones to act like their rights are being taken away from them. Luckily, we are able to breathe a huge sigh of relief. There’s not much that Stengel can do to take away the civil liberties of Americans from his new chair. He’s going to run media outlets that target foreign audiences with news and views and they will be state-operated.
The red flags that are being sent up are hard to ignore, however. They are investing over $600 million in this endeavor, so Americans would not be wrong for wondering why this is taking place. These are funds that would be better spent elsewhere. That’s why it is very important for patriots like Turley to sound off the warnings as soon as possible. Otherwise, innocent Americans are going to end up being left flat-footed.
