This Is a First! We Agree With AOC Democrats Should Take a Public Position on Filibuster

We never thought that we would be saying this but AOC has become quite the asset to the GOP. First, she was the one who would not stop talking about taking away funding from the police. The slogan was branded into everyone’s minds to the point where it was exclusively associated with her party.

From there, it was long before they began to underperform their expectations on Election Day. The House and Senate hung in the balance, as AOC’s careless words rang in everyone’s heads. Now, she is telling other members of her party that they need to be monitoring all of the Democrats who are not Joe Manchin.

As it turns out, there are others who do not wish to end the filibuster. Manchin just happens to be the most vocal about it, which is why he is being associated with the topic. Schumer and the other senators are enjoying the current state of affairs because many of them are in a lose/lose when it comes to this debate. No matter what position they take, many of them are going to end up in trouble with their voting bases.

Let’s say that someone like Arizona’s Mark Kelly decides that the filibuster needs to be ended. If he says this publicly, guess what? The Arizona Republicans are going to start working even harder to remove him in a general election. If he sides with the conservatives, the progressives are going to turn out in droves during the next primary.

Manchin has created an awesome heat shield for them to hide behind at the moment. They are certainly basking in the warmth. The rest of the Democrats know that they are not going to be able to move their liberal agenda unless Kelly is able to make it through re-election. AOC could easily look the other way herself.

With Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema standing in the way, Kelly and others are given the ability to hide. If you can dislodge Manchin, it is easier to turn up the pressure on the others. AOC does not wish to do that and Mitch McConnell is probably more than happy about this. The Daily Beast has more about this ongoing tug of war:

“It’s something of a symbiotic relationship,” Ocasio-Cortez told The Daily Beast on Wednesday. “There are certainly more senators with reservations about the filibuster that are giving Manchin steam to stay firm. But I have also heard from colleagues that none of those other senators want to play Manchin’s role.”

Ocasio-Cortez continued that, if Manchin or Sinema folded, she believed those other senators would come around to eliminating the filibuster as well. “That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be pressed for their position and offer clarity to their constituents, though,” she said of the senators letting Manchin do the talking. “People deserve to know with clarity where their elected representation stands on the filibuster.”

A Democratic aide told The Daily Beast in a May story on Manchin that a lot of members are “happy Joe Manchin is the tip of the spear, getting shot at every day. Seven or eight of them stand behind him.”

Maggie Hassan and Catherine Cortez Masto are also in a similar position to Kelly. They’ve been able to maintain strategic ambiguity when it comes to their position on the filibuster. As long as Manchin remains in opposition on the filibuster, they get to remain in the background. No one will ever be willing to call them out for dodging the topic.

AOC does not realize that she is creating more problems for the Democrats than she is solving. Kelly and his ilk are centrists by nature, which makes them more electable than most. If she decides to pull the curtain back, this is going to do more harm than good. Nancy Pelosi is already starting to dislike her and from where we are sitting, it is not that hard to see why.
